Choosing/Scanning a photo

Step One:
You can either scan in your photo or you can use one you already have on your computer. If your using one from a backup cd/dvd or on your hd then you can skip to the next step.

Scan in your photo at 300dpi. My photo was to dark when I scanned it in at default settings. I had to rescan and adjust my scanner settings to a higher brightness. The trick here is to get all detail in your photo for example wrinkles in a dark shirt need to be seen. You may have to adjust accordingly.

My default scan is shown below on the left. After I adjusted the brightness I was satisfied with the shirt detail. You don't have to worry about colors because we will be coloring it in later. You just want to make sure you can get as much detail as you can.

Step Two:
Make a copy of your photo and then save the original. Working with your copy, duplicate it and then hide your bottom layer. Go to effects>art media>black pencil with the following settings:

You may have to adjust your own settings. I've added arrows to my photo so you can see my focal points for adjusting my detail setting. The goal is to get outline detail. This will be our template for tracing the outline.

Step Three:
Merge your layers visible then copy>paste as new image. Print your new image in greyscale at full scale size to fit an 8 1/2 by 11 sheet. The reason for this is because we will be scanning our image back into PSP and so if you decide to resize your image later you can resize smaller. A good rule of thumb is always resize smaller and never larger (unless you really really have to).

Take your printed sheet and place another empty sheet overtop like a layer. Then with a pencil trace over the lines. Remember tracing pages in coloring books? ;)

Once your satisfied with your result, you can trace over your pencil lines with a black tip marker or if your using a wacom tablet you can use the marker tool on an art media layer to trace it after you scan your outline back in.

Step Four:
Scan your outline back into PSP at 300dpi and greyscale. If your using a wacom tablet, simply use your marker tool on an art media layer and trace your outline with a transparent background. Otherwise, using your magic wand click anywhere in the white area and then hit delete key. Make a new raster layer and move it to the bottom in your layers palette so it is below your outline. Rename this layer to "Coloring".

Now you can start to color in your image using your brush tool on this layer. You may also want to make a new layer for each color you use but you don't have to. Here is my progress below:

If you want to add some shading, use a slightly darker shade of the color your using with a low density setting on a separate layer, then you can blend it in with your smudge tool.

Here is my finished result:

Step Five:
Merge your layers visible. You should still have a transparent background. Duplicate your colored photo layer. Make one copy black and white. I chose effects>photoeffects>black and white film with 100 strength.

Step Six:
Go to selections>select all>float>defloat. This will make a selection around our black and white outline. Create a new raster layer. For a comic strip look we need a dot effect. Choose your flood fill tool then from your materials palette choose the color #202020 with a polka dot texture at 200%.

Fill your selection on the new raster layer so the dots are now an overlay.

Merge your dots layer with your black and white layer by right clicking your dots layer and select merge down. Now move your colored layer above your dots layer and then adjust the opacity slightly until you can see the dots. Add a background and the merge all.

Done!

Now that you know the basics for turning your photos into comic strip effects, you can use this technique to create fun greeting cards and other special gifts for family and friends!
