Creating a Basic Button

Step one: Create a new image 400 X 400 pixels at 200 resolution. You can choose a larger or smaller size but a good rule of thumb is to create larger then resize to fit -smaller- later. Create a New Raster Layer. On the tools menu select the selections tool.

Browse the selections and choose the circle. Use default settings and make sure anti-alias is checked. Create your selection in the center of your canvas like below.

Step two: On the tools menu select flood fill tool. You can fill your button with a color of your choice. I chose a burnt yellow #b6af04. Do not de-select! From the File Menu choose Selections>Modify>Contract 20. Do not de-select! Go back to Selections>Invert. From the File Menu again choose Effects>3D Effects>Inner Bevel with these settings.

Now you can de-select. Selections>Select None. SAVE!

You should now have a nice outer edge to your button.

Step Three: Using the selections tool again, choose the circle and this time create two smaller circles on the inside of your button to create the holes. Once you get the size you like for the holes just hit the delete key.

Now lets add a little depth to our plain button.

Step Four: Create a new raster layer. Using the selections tool again trace over top the left button hole making the circle slightly larger and then flood fill with a slightly darker color, I chose #7b7403. Do not de-select! Using your mover tool click your flood filled circle once and then tap your left arrow key 10 times, then tap your up arrow key 10 times. Hit the delete key. Do not de-select! Now move your half moon back into the selection by tapping your arrow keys 10 times down then 10 times right. You should now have something simular to mine below.

Repeat step Four for the other button hole. Remember to create it on its own layer.

Step Five: Move both half moon layers to the bottom. They should be behind the button. You can also adjust the position of them using the mover tool. If you like you can create a light gradient to the inner circle of the button.

Done!

Add a drop shadow and some thread for a finished look. Now its ready to go on any of your digital layouts!

Finished result:

Now that you have the basic idea for creating a simple button you can not only use this technique for round buttons but you can also use it for many other shapes.
