Program Used: Paint Shop Pro X Skill Level: Intermediate Notes: Should be familiar in working with selection tool. Materials Used: SD Torn Edge Brush Written By: Julie Russell Adding Texture Step one: Open your patterned paper. This will also work for plain paper (single color or gradients) as well. Duplicate your paper layer. Hide the bottom one and use your new copy. It's a good idea to get into this habit so that if you get to far into your changes you can always start over. Create a new raster layer and name it Transparency Layer. Move it to the bottom. You should now see something like this in your layers palette. ![]() Step two: Choose your paper layer and then from the file menu apply a texture effect by choosing Effects>Texture Effects>Texture... I used the settings below, however you can choose any texture and setting you like. ![]() SAVE! You can save your paper as it is and use it without an edge. If you want to add some more creativity to your paper then continue on! Step Three: (without a brush) Creating a finished edge. One of the more popular edges in scrapbooking is the torn edge look. If you don't have a brush then you can also create this look very easily in PSP by using the selection tool. If your using a brush then see Step Three: (using a brush) below. From the Tools menu select the Selections Tool>Freehand with the following settings: ![]() Step Four: Begin creating your selection from the top left corner and about 5-10 pixels in depth drawing a jagged edge down to the left bottom corner. Hit your Delete key. Your edge will look something simular to mine below. ![]() ![]() Step Five: Continue working around your paper with the selection tool until you have all four sides "digitally" torn. ![]() Finished result: ![]() Step Three: (using a brush) Creating a finished edge. I used a SD Torn Edge Brush which you can purchase in the SD store. You may also use a brush of your own that has a good edge to it. Select your eraser tool and browse to SD Torn Edge Brush with the following settings. If your using your own brush your settings may have to be adjusted differently then what I have. ![]() Then simply begin working around your edges by clicking and erasing your edges away! You should end up with something simular to mine below. While this method is proven to be much faster then using the selection tool, you can achieve the same result. ![]() SAVE! You can now use your paper just like it is or you can add more to the torn edges by giving them a burnt look. Here's how; Step 4: From the tools menu select the Burn Tool then browse to the brush you used to create your edge, in this tutorial we used SD Torn Brush Edge, and then use with the following settings. ![]() Work around your edges until you get the result you like. ![]() If you used the selection tool you can still use a burn brush with the following settings. ![]() Work around your edges until you get the result you like. ![]() Done! Finished results using both techniques: ![]() Now that you have the basic idea for creating texture and edges you can not only use this technique for papers but for many other uses as well such as ribbons and tags. Try painting an edge using the same brushes for a different look. The possiblities are endless! Have fun! ©Sajestic Designs |
